Patented Wide/Narrow Tooth Profiles

Maximum chainring performance begins with chain alignment. Our patented Drop-Stop wide/narrow tooth profile ensures that the chain is centered on the chainring. This means best-in-class chain retention, extended life of the chainring, increased mud-shedding, and improved drivetrain efficiency.

Optimized For Your Chain

One Size Fits All means a compromise for all. Universal chainrings just don’t work when there are two fundamentally different chain designs. This is why we have two Drop-Stop chainring tooth profiles that are optimized for specific chain applications. Wolf Tooth chainrings provide maximum performance without compromise.

Machined in Minnesota

All Wolf Tooth chainrings come from the CNC machines here at Wolf Tooth HQ in Minnesota, USA. Machining chainrings in-house means we can control the entire production life cycle, from design, to prototypes, to machining, to fulfillment, all while maintaining meticulous quality control every step along the way.

PowerTrac Elliptical

A major benefit of oval is how the shape of the chainring alters your gearing in two important phases of your pedal stroke by harnessing your body’s natural biomechanics. Here’s how it works. The area of the chainring with the larger diameter engages with the chain at the optimal point on the downstroke, we call this the Power Zone. If you were to look at a clock, the Power Zone sits between 1-5 and 7-11. Conversely, the Recovery Zone sits between 11-1 and 5-7 – is the weakest part of the pedal stroke, when the oval maximizes your efficiency. A 34T oval chainring behaves like a 36T chainring when you want power, and a 32T chainring when you’re climbing.

This all adds up to a smoother, more efficient pedal stroke with even torque for better traction at the rear wheel. With a Wolf Tooth oval chainring, you can harness more of your strength in the Power Zone, while having easier pedaling in the Recovery Zone.

These chainrings are for Shimano GRX cranks. They feature our patented Drop-Stop® design for the best wear life, chain retention, and mud clearance. Drop-Stop ST is specifically for the Shimano 12-speed Hyperglide+ chain, which is used by GRX 12-speed. Drop Stop-B works with all  other 9, 10, 11, and 12-spd chains, including SRAM Flattop.

Compatibility

  • Aero chainring available in 46T. Sizes 38T and 42T are non-aero.
  • Compatible with Shimano GRX 600 series cranksets (FC-RX600-1, FC-RX600-10, RX600-10, FC-RX610-1, FC-RX610-2). Also compatible with Shimano GRX 800 series cranksets (FC-RX810-1, FC-RX810-2, FC-RX820-1, FC-RX820-2).
  • Drop-Stop ST is designed for Shimano 12-speed Hyperglide+ chains
  • Drop-Stop B tooth profile is compatible with SRAM Flattop chain
  • Wolf Tooth’s patented Drop-Stop wide/narrow tooth profile provides the ultimate chain retention and mud-shedding ability

Recommendations

  • If you plan to ride in very muddy conditions, we recommend a chainguide or chainkeeper in addition to a clutch-type rear derailleur. Without these precautions, you may experience chaindrops and/or chainsuck.

Tooth shape is nearly identical to Drop-Stop A, but has narrower teeth. Valley between teeth is deeper to accommodate larger rollers on Flattop chain. Outside faces of narrow and wide teeth touch chain to guide alignment.

Drop-Stop B Chainrings navigate_next

The original Drop-Stop tooth profile. The wide teeth are wider than Drop-Stop B. Outside faces of narrow and wide teeth guide chain alignment.

Drop-Stop A Chainrings navigate_next

Narrower teeth than Drop-Stop A. Wide teeth use Symmetric Trapezoidal (ST) profile to match extended inner edge on chain to create alignment (outside faces of wide teeth do not touch). Interaction of narrow teeth and chain are similar to Drop-Stop A and B.

*We are in the process of migrating most Drop-Stop A to Drop-Stop B to make them compatible with  SRAM Road and Transmission (T-type) Flattop chains.
